Tips for Unpacking

Moving day is the big day but the work doesn’t end there. Just like packing, unpacking will take time. Unpack a few boxes every day and have patience. Try not to stress about the amount of work and remember to enjoy your new surroundings.

Here are a few tips to help you settle into your new home.

  1. Essentials first. Hopefully you have packed an essentials box for each room. Each box will contain the items you will need for the first few days in that room. They get loaded last and unpacked first. Ensure the kitchen and bathroom have soap, hand towels and other essentials for the first day.

  2. Set up and make each bed so that when you’re exhausted you can look forward to a good night’s rest.

  3. Arrange the living room furniture before unpacking the boxes in this room. Keep the living room clear of boxes if possible to try different furniture placements.

  4. When unpacking, the goal is to get your things out of boxes and into cupboards and wardrobes as quickly as possible. When choosing a storage area, consider how often the item is used, how to group it with similar items, the amount of space each group needs, and if the item is used in a fixed space such as a stove or a sink. Don’t worry too much though - everything will find it’s place over time.
